The name Ribes is derived from the Arabic &#8220;ribas.&#8221; Ribas is a sour-tasting variety of rhubarb in the Middle East. Uva comes from Latin and means &#8220;grape&#8221; or &#8220;grape-shaped. And crispa comes from &#8220;crispare&#8221; and means &#8220;hairy&#8221; or &#8220;spiny.      <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The gooseberry belongs to the Ribes family. This family includes the black currant, the alpine berry and the currant. In Flanders, the gooseberry is also known as &#8220;prickleberry. Gooseberries range in taste from sour-sweet to sweet. It is a somewhat lesser known fruit.
