Hibiscus tea

Hibiscus tea is an infusion made from the dried calyxes of the Hibiscus sabdariffa flower. It is known for its deep red color, fresh, slightly sour taste (often compared to cranberry) and is a popular and thirst-quenching beverage both hot and cold. The tea is caffeine-free.

What substances are in this?

Hibiscus tea is a rich source of bioactive compounds:

  • Antioxidants: Very rich in powerful antioxidants, especially anthocyanins and flavonoids, the substances that give tea its distinctive red color.
  • Vitamin C: Contains a good amount of vitamin C, which contributes to its slightly acidic taste.
  • Organic acids: Contains citric acid and malic acid.

What does this mean for my health?

The impressive amount of antioxidants and other compounds in hibiscus tea provides the following benefits:

  • Cardiovascular: One of the most researched benefits is its positive impact on blood circulation. Regular drinking of hibiscus tea can help lower hypertension and help maintain a healthy cholesterol balance (lowering “bad” LDL cholesterol).
  • Immune System and Cell Protection: The high content of vitamin C supports the immune system. The antioxidants protect the body from free radicals, which helps counter oxidative stress.
  • Hydration and Digestion: Hibiscus tea is a low-calorie and caffeine-free beverage that helps with hydration. It is also traditionally known for supporting digestion and has a mild diuretic effect.

Why do we use Hibiscus Tea?

We use hibiscus tea because it is a healthy, natural and refreshing thirst quencher. It is a great way to get antioxidants and Vitamin C without caffeine. Its vibrant color and slightly sour taste make it an ideal and healthy replacement for soft drinks.
