St. John’s wort
St. John’s wort is an important plant in almost all European cultures. In fact, there are many legends associated with this herb. The herb is named after St. John because the peak of its flowering falls on the feast day of St. John (June 24). On this day, Christians commemorate the birthday of John the Baptist.
St. John’s wort contains a red oil and has led to much legend. For example, among ancient Germanic people, this red oil is said to have been the blood of Baldr (the Germanic god of nature). For this reason, various magical powers were labeled to the herb. For example, a woman who wanted to have children had to pick the herb naked on Midsummer Night. In ancient times, St. John’s wort was used in many different traditional ways. Even today, it is still widely used.
