The gooseberry is also called “Ribes uva-crispa. The name Ribes is derived from the Arabic “ribas.” Ribas is a sour-tasting variety of rhubarb in the Middle East. Uva comes from Latin and means “grape” or “grape-shaped. And crispa comes from “crispare” and means “hairy” or “spiny. The gooseberry belongs to the Ribes family. This family includes the black currant, the alpine berry and the currant. In Flanders, the gooseberry is also known as “prickleberry. Gooseberries range in taste from sour-sweet to sweet. It is a somewhat lesser known fruit. A pity, because it is very tasty and also very healthy.
