Hemp Seed
Health benefits of Hemp seeds
Hemp seed (or “hemp hearts” when peeled) comes from the Cannabis sativa plant, but contains negligible amounts of the psychoactive compound THC, making it safe and legal to consume. It has a pleasant, mild, nutty flavor and a light, crunchy texture, making it an easy addition to smoothies, salads, yogurt and oatmeal.
What substances are in this?
Hemp seed is a nutritional powerhouse, best known for:
- Protein: It is one of the most complete vegetable protein sources and contains all nine essential amino acids needed by the body.
- Healthy Fats: Very rich in unsaturated fatty acids (Omega-3 and Omega-6) in an exceptionally ideal ratio (often 1:3).
- Minerals: Contains high concentrations of essential minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, iron and zinc.
- Fiber: Whole seeds are a good source of dietary fiber (the hulled variety contains less fiber).
- Vitamins: Rich in Vitamin E (an antioxidant) and several B vitamins.
What does this mean for my health?
The strong nutritional value of hemp seeds provides the following benefits:
- Cardiovascular: The healthy Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids in the optimal ratio help maintain a healthy heart and may help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
- Muscle Building and Energy: The complete protein profile supports the growth and recovery of muscle mass. Minerals such as iron and magnesium contribute to normal energy levels and help reduce fatigue.
- Skin and Hair: The fatty acids and Vitamin E play a role in keeping the skin healthy and may be beneficial for skin conditions such as eczema due to their anti-inflammatory properties.
- Digestion: The fiber in the seeds contributes to healthy and regular bowel function.
