You must have done it once as a child: chewing on a stick of licorice until a sort of plume is attached. We all thought it had something magical about it: wood that tastes like candy!
Liquorice is not, as many people think, the branch, but the root of the licorice bush. The main component of licorice is glycyrrhizin. This is a substance that gives the typical taste of licorice.
