The chili pepper, also known as the red pepper, is a collective name for several types of elongated chili peppers. The most well-known pepper is the red one. There are also green, yellow, orange and even white chilies. The green variety is actually a red pepper that is not yet ripe. Capsaicin is the substance that makes the pepper so spicy.
Chilli comes from plants of the genus ‘Capsicum’ from the so-called ‘nightshade family’. They are native to Central America. The pepper is also very healthy. We explain why.
