Marigold

The marigold, also known as calendula, is known for its various special properties. The originally calendula species probably originated in Asia and Eastern Europe. This edible plant is now used in homeopathic remedies and various dishes in many countries. We tell you more about the marigold and what substances it contains.

What substances are in it?

Marigold contains a wide variety of phytonutrients. The edible leaves are provided with several flavonol glycosides. Furthermore, it contains the carotenoids lycopene, violaxantine, carotene, calendulin and flavoxantine. It also contains mucilages, tannins, flavonoids (antioxidants), bitter substances, sterols, organic acids and many different types of essential oils.

Why do we use marigold?

Marigold has a mild-spicy, somewhat peppery flavor. So very specific, but very tasty (if we do say so ourselves). The flower is very versatile. It is used to make tea, as well as in skin care products. In addition, the orange flowers are also used as a natural dye in foods, such as cheese and butter.
