Sesame paste

Sesame paste, also known as Tahin or Tahini, is a creamy paste made from ground sesame seeds. It is a basic ingredient in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine. Nowadays it can also be found in Dutch supermarkets.

What substances are in this?

Sesame paste is a nutritious powerhouse, rich in various healthy nutrients:

  • Healthy fats: It contains mostly unsaturated fats.
  • Protein and Fiber: A good source of plant protein and dietary fiber, contributing to feeling satiated.
  • Vitamins: Rich in several B vitamins and vitamin E.
  • Minerals: Contains significant amounts of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, phosphorus and selenium.
  • Antioxidants: Sesame seeds contain lignans, powerful antioxidants.

One tablespoon (about 15 grams) of sesame paste already provides a nice amount of fiber and protein, and is rich in minerals.

What does this mean for my health?

The diverse combination of nutrients in sesame paste can support various aspects of your health:

  • Heart and Blood vessels: The unsaturated fats and lignans (antioxidants) present in Tahini can help regulate cholesterol levels (reduce “bad” LDL cholesterol) and have a positive impact on blood pressure. This contributes to a healthy cardiovascular system.
  • Bones and Teeth: Sesame paste, especially that made from whole (unhulled) sesame seeds, is an excellent source of calcium and phosphorus, which are essential for maintaining strong bones.
  • Energy and Resistance: The minerals present such as iron (important for red blood cell production and oxygen transport) and copper (supports iron absorption) contribute to increased energy. In addition, antioxidants and minerals such as selenium support the immune system.
  • Anti-inflammation: The antioxidants in sesame seeds are associated with anti-inflammatory properties in the body.
