Black pepper

Pepper has been around for thousands of years and is native to Persian regions and surrounding areas. The word “pepper” comes from the word “pipali” from ancient Indian writings in Sanskrit. Through Persia, the use of pepper reached the Egyptians and the Ancient Greeks and was spread further around the world. It also played an important role later on: the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC) originated, among other things, from the desire of the Dutch to get pepper themselves in distant lands. Enough history about pepper.

The difference in peppers

Black pepper is extracted from unripe berries of the tropical pepper plant ‘Piper nigrum’. These peppers turn brown to black when dried. The outside of the black pepper is wrinkled. There are many other types and colors of peppercorns. This all has to do with the ripening process. The longer the process takes, the lighter the grains. The sharp taste of peppercorns is due to the substance piperine.

Why do we use black pepper?

Pepper is a healthy seasoning in all your recipes. The versatile ingredient gives dishes just that little bit extra. So we like to use pepper to add extra flavor to our juices.
