How healthy is drinking juice really?
More and more people are drinking juice in hopes of supporting their health. At the same time, critical voices are occasionally raised, saying that drinking juice is not that healthy at all. At Sap.je, we therefore regularly get the question: How healthy is drinking juice really? Since making juice as healthy as possible is our main mission, we have thought a lot about this. However, giving a simple answer to this question remains difficult. All we can say is: it depends on a lot of factors! In this blog you will discover what it takes for juice drinking to be truly healthy. This will help you make the right choice, whether you want to make your own juice or buy juice.
Is drinking fruit juice healthy?
Not so long ago, fruit juices from concentrate were referred to as the “responsible choice. Since many people with busy lives find it difficult to eat several fruits in a day, they regularly drank such juices. It later became clear that such fruit juice cannot replace eating fruit. In fact, it is actually not that healthy! First of all, juice from concentrate contains only a small part of the original vitamins and minerals.
Fruit sugars
Second, this juice contains little fiber and a lot of fruit sugars. Especially if you drink it quickly, your blood sugar levels become quite unbalanced. If you drink it often, this can lead to obesity or diabetes. Freshly squeezed fruit juice from your own kitchen often contains more nutrients and sometimes a little more fiber. Still, with this you keep the disadvantage of fruit sugars. Moreover, acidic fruit juices are often bad for your tooth enamel. So we say: drink fruit juice in moderation and rather choose vegetable-based juice.
Is drinking vegetable juice healthy?
Vegetable juice typically contains much less sugar than fruit juice. How much of the original vitamins and minerals actually end up in your glass depends on several factors. For example, the quality of your ingredients is important for nutritional value. It’s best to work with fresh, organic vegetables. That way you can be sure they are high in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants and low in harmful pesticides. The pressing method is also important. That’s why we at Sap.je have done a lot of research on the best way to press vegetables into juice. For us, the best way is the one that ensures the highest nutritional value and the best taste.
Slowjuicing
Vegetable juicing with the slow juicer was the undisputed winner on both counts. Compared to cold pressing or using a centrifugal juicer, juicing with the slow juicer provided better aroma, color and taste. But most importantly, this pressing method preserved the most vitamins, minerals, trace elements, antioxidants and enzymes. Also read this blog about the benefits of slow juicing.
At least 85 percent vegetables
To add extra nutrients to the vegetable juice and further enhance its taste, we add a little bit of fruit, herbs and spices. Want to make your own vegetable juice with a little fruit? Then make sure your juice is at least 85 percent vegetable juice. We do the same with our juices.

Is drinking slowjuice vegetable juice healthier than drinking a smoothie?
Let’s say up front that drinking vegetable juice and drinking a smoothie are both healthy. They are just that in different ways. In a smoothie, the ingredients are chopped into mush. Often this is a rather thick mass because it still contains the fiber of the vegetables and fruits used. In itself, there is little wrong with that, but to make it drinkable, you have to add liquid. For a 250 ml. smoothie, you often have to use as much as 150 ml. of water or some other liquid. In addition, the many fibers make a smoothie make you feel full quickly. So you don’t easily drink a lot of it, so you get relatively less vegetables. Moreover, some people get digestive problems due to the large amount of fiber.
More vegetables in your glass with slow juicing
If you go slow juicing vegetables, you get a completely different result. Here the vegetables are slowly pressed by a machine that more or less mimics your chewing movements. The juice that’s left contains about 10 to 20 percent of the original fiber. That’s not a bad thing (unless you’ve used a lot of fruit), because fiber can be ingested in other ways. Slowjuice juice, on the other hand, is rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other valuable nutrients. Moreover, with slow juicing you can get more vegetables in a 250 ml glass because you don’t have to add liquid. So the result is a highly concentrated power drink. You can read more about it on this blog.
Is drinking vegetable juice healthier than eating vegetables?
We are also frequently asked this question. Basically, you can say that drinking vegetable juice should not replace eating vegetables. In fact, both have benefits. It is best to drink vegetable juice as a supplement to your regular vegetable diet. But looking at the numbers, many people struggle to eat enough vegetables. Getting lots of vegetables easily
Drinking organic vegetable juice is a way to get lots of vegetables easily. Our 240-ml juices contain an average of 400 grams of raw vegetables. Drinking such a juice is easier to do than digesting 400 grams of raw vegetables. As you have read, the slow juicing method preserves many of the original nutrients. In pressed form, in many cases our bodies can absorb them better than if we eat the whole vegetable, precisely because the nutrients are already largely separated from the fiber. As a result, the vitamins, minerals and other beneficial substances enter your bloodstream faster, without costing your digestive system much time or energy.
